How we test foot spas

Best foot spas to relax and pamper tired feet - Which? (12)

We select the most popular foot spas from UK retailers – including more than one Argos foot spa and Boots foot spa – and a panel of testers put them through their paces. We buy all the products we test.

Find out more about how Which? is not influenced by product manufacturers or retailers and how your support helps us to stay editorially independent.

Each foot spa is assessed on the following:

Ease of use

We assess how easy it is to fill and empty, as well as rating its portability.

Relaxation rating

Each tester tries out the foot spa, rating how relaxing the overall experience is, and assessing the extra features.

Noise

As well as giving each one a subjective assessment to see if spoils relaxation, we also use a decibel meter to measure how noisy each foot spa is.

Heat retention

We use temperature probes to assess how well each spa retains heat, as well as checking the accuracy of the temperature settings if it has them.

How to clean a foot spa

  1. Make sure to unplug the appliance before cleaning.
  2. Rinse the unit out with water.
  3. Use mild cleaning liquids to clean it. We used Milton sterilising tablets. Avoid using solvents, abrasive cleaners and harsh detergents.
  4. Wipe the foot spa down with a soft, damp cloth.
  5. Once dry, store your appliance in a cool, dry place.

However each foot spa comes with a different set of cleaning instructions, so make sure to consult the manual for more information on cleaning your appliance.

Are foot spas good for you?

Soaking your feet in warm water can help to soften corns and calluses, as well as reducing general aches and pains. A good foot spa may also have the added benefit of stress relief by making you feel more relaxed.

Can diabetics use foot spas?

Diabetes can impact the feeling and circulation around your feet. Therefore, the NHS advises that you avoid exposure to direct heat from foot spas, hot baths, hot water bottles and electric blankets.

How to buy the best foot spa

  • Motorised rollers make a big difference in improving the experience of a foot spa which non-motorised rollers struggle to replicate and our testers loved them. However, they may not be for everyone and reviewers elsewhere find them uncomfortable.
  • If you buy a machine with non-motorised rollers, avoid overfilling it as moving your feet around can cause water to splash out on to the floor.
  • While keep-warm settings are useful for maintaining water temperature, if you buy a foot spa with temperature controls, it’s worth setting it several degrees lower than you’d like and checking the water is comfortable before putting your feet in as we’ve found that they’re not always accurate.
  • It can be awkward to carry a foot spa, plug and wire, so a carry handle is always useful.
  • Other than the foldaway HoMedics foot spa we tested, all foot spas are fairly bulky products, so may not be ideal for if you have limited storage space.
  • Some foot spas are not big enough for those with larger feet to use, so make sure to check our maximum foot size advice.
