What’s your favorite part of the morning?

Mine is my grounding cacao ritual. I sip on ceremonial cacao while setting intentions for the day, followed by meditation, breathwork (I love this breathwork app)or a yoga practice.

WHY CACAO?

Intentionally consuming cacao has been a powerful ally that’s massively supported me on my journey in living more fully and from the heart – as an entrepreneur and a human. It’s what gave me the confidence to go nomadic, buy a tiny cabin, and launch a podcast.

A cacao ritual is a beautiful way to connect to the energy of Gaia and plant kingdom.

Before we get to the recipe…

Are you new to cacao ceremony and want to learn more about Theobroma cacao, what is cacao ceremony, and where the tradition comes from? I’ve done extensive research on this topic, including interviewing experts and traveling to cacao farms in Guatemala.

Ceremonial cacao recipe creation is a way to tap into your intuition.

My cacao elixir recipe differs from day to day and is based on what my body is drawn to. Rose and cacao is a beautiful combination that has a very rounded, soft flavor and a heart-opening effect.

This recipe is fantastic if you’re on your path of cultivating more self-love through simple daily rituals, or if you want to share a mindful ritual with your partner. Cacao on its own is known as a powerful heart opener, and combining it with rose – which is said to bring love, healing and compassion – takes this effect to the next level.

Some ceremonial cacao blends come pre-mixed with spices. The recipe below is for 100% pure ceremonial cacao – its purity leaves room to play with!

Heart Opening Rose Ceremonial Cacao Recipe

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons of chopped ceremonial cacao (I love Cacao Laboratory Arriba Nacional 100% Cacao Paste) or 10 cacao discs (I love Ora Cacao Tantric Rose Ceremonial Cacao Discs). Both brands generously offer a discount on all products when you use code BREAKFASTCRIMINALS.
  • 1 cup of rose tea. You have options here: use a consciously sourced rose powder from a trustworthy brand like Anima Mundi, or make your own rose tea. To make it, brewTulsi Sweet Rose tea (~3 minutes) or food grade rose petals (~10 minutes in hot water).
  • Sweetener of your choice: I like 1 teaspoon monkfruit powder, 1 date, 1 teaspoon of raw honey or maple syrup. Use less or more depending on your taste. Traditionally, ceremonial cacao is served with no sweetener at all (it’s an acquired taste – meet your body where it’s at).
  • A pinch of Himalayan Salt

Optional additives:

  • A splash of nut or seed milk of your choice
  • 1-2 teaspoons coconut oil to make it extra creamy
  • 1 teaspoon maca for energy and an earthy taste

Directions:

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until creamy. Start on low speed, slowly increasing to high while allowing the intention for your cacao ritual to crystalize, feeling gratitude for cacao medicine.

Want to make cacao without a blender?

Combine all ingredients in a pot on low heat, and let the cacao melt while constantly stirring it (don’t let it boil).

Pour the cacao in a cup that feels special. Optionally, add rose petals on top.

Holding it in front of your heart, I invite you to do a little gratitude and intention ritual (see below).

Ceremonial Cacao Recipe: Heart Opening Rose Elixir (2)

Cacao Ritual:

Holding the cacao with your eyes closed, say out loud or silently in your head:

  • I give thanks to the heart of the Sky
  • I give thanks to the heart of the Earth
  • I give thanks to the heart of the Fire
  • I give thanks to the heart of the Water
  • I give thanks to everyone who brought this cacao to me/us
  • I give thanks to my own heart for showing up and being open to receiving the messages I’m meant to receive

Open your eyes, sip, play ceremonial music (here’s my cacao ceremony playlist) and listen to the messages that come through – write them down in your journal or dance them out.

You can also follow along in this video, where I shared a short cacao prayer and grounding meditation.

Happy journeying into your heart! Let me know how it goes ❤️
